Los Gatos, March 3, 2023: The Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District is proud to announce that the Saratoga High School’s Indian Cultural Awareness Club (ICAC) has raised $21,000 to donate to student-selected charities Koshish and One School at a Time which educate underprivileged children in India.
Fundraising took place in two parts leading up to the Bombay on the Bay event, an 18-year tradition at Saratoga High School of South Asian performances and a comedic skit. For the first time, ICAC students planned the first-ever Saratoga Garba, a traditional Indian dance festival hosted in October 2022 with over 400 community participants. In addition, ticket sales to the sold out Bombay on the Bay event held February 18, 2023, contributed to the $21,000 total. Performances included grade-level dances and hosted as many as 50 students on stage at once.
“Celebrating diversity in our schools is such an important part of building a caring and inclusive school campus,” shared Superintendent Bill W. Sanderson. “I am incredibly proud that these students are adding a philanthropic lens to their community-building events. Their leadership is to be commended.”
The Indian Cultural Awareness Club is led by student officers Anand Agrawal, Ojas Somani, Varun Shah, Annika Muju, Avani Gupta, Risha Desai, and Isha Jagadish, all seniors at Saratoga High School. Open for participation by anyone interested, the 2023 Bombay on the Bay event showcased over 300 students school-wide, the most in recent history.
