Los Gatos, December 8, 2022: The Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District (LGSUHSD) is proud to announce that Saratoga High School’s (SHS) VEX Robotics Team 95071V earned the Robot Skills Champion and the Design Award at the VEX Spin Up Tournament that took place on November 13, 2022 in Placer, California. Competing against 26 teams from 10 high schools, this win qualifies them for the US Open Robotics Championship that will take place in March 2023, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
With the highest combined score of driver’s skills and autonomous programming, in addition to the most effective robot engineering design process, Team 95071V (with attending members freshmen Shirina Cao, Quinn Gifford, Richard Lee, Eliza Lin, Adit Sharma, and Ruiyan Zhu) had to create a robot within the 18x18x18 inch size limit that would intake and accurately shoot discs into their respective goals, spin rollers to a designated color, and expand across a 12 foot x 12 foot field, all while competing among four other robots.
Additionally, Saratoga High School’s Team 95071X (with attending members freshmen Kimi Chan, Lia Go, Vivian Lei, Sophie Qin, and Bryan Zhao) also had a strong performance at the tournament and was honored as a tournament finalist.
“The teamwork and collaboration prior to each competition is impressive and such an important part of the journey,” shared Bill W. Sanderson, Superintendent of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District. “I know that students can spend hours per week crafting and perfecting their robots. We are so proud that our students are able to apply the theoretical lessons of math and physics that they learn in the classroom to the design and program of their creation.”
Divided by age groups, VEX Robotics puts together various robotics competitions around the world for students from elementary to post-secondary programs. Saratoga High School’s VEX Robotics program is an after-school program in their 2nd competitive season. This year’s program currently has 4 competition teams.
