New LGHS Principal Named!

Kevin Buchanan Named LGHS Principal
I am excited to announce the appointment of Mr. Kevin Buchanan as the new principal for Los Gatos High School.  Mr. Buchanan was selected after an extensive recruitment and selection process, including panel interviews with parents, staff, students, and administration and thorough reference checking, emerging from a strong pool of candidates from around the state as the right choice to lead Los Gatos High School. He will officially begin on July 1, 2021, but we will work closely with him throughout the spring to ensure a smooth transition.

Mr. Buchanan brings a total of 25 years of experience in education, including 18 years in high school administration, most recently serving for 11 years as the principal of Oak Park High School in Southern California.  During his time there, he has overseen the increase in enrollment as a District of Choice school, which required the creation and growth of programs including Honors and Advanced Placement, Engineering and Career and Technical Education Pathways, Athletics, and Visual and Performing Arts. Mr. Buchanan has facilitated two school modernization bonds, one at La Cañada and another at Oak Park that included every classroom, instructional space, and sports facility. Under Mr. Buchanan’s leadership, OPHS has earned two California Distinguished School Awards in 2013 and 2019 and a 2015 California Gold Ribbon Award.  Mr. Buchanan was instrumental in embracing the tenets of Stanford University’s Challenge Success program resulting in modification of the school calendar, addressing Title IX issues, and implementing Peer Counseling to alleviate student stress and address students’ social and emotional needs. Mr. Buchanan also serves as the club advisor for the Thespians Society and the ESports team at OPHS. Integral to these successes is his commitment to ensuring a collaborative, inclusive approach to leadership, student connectedness, and community engagement.

Originally from Cheshire, England, Mr. Buchanan earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles with honors before beginning his teaching career at Los Angeles High School where for seven years he taught a variety of courses including Advanced Placement English Literature and Special Education as well as serving as the Standards-Based Assessment Coordinator and Senior Class Advisor.  He earned his master’s degree in Educational Leadership at UCLA’s Principal Leadership Institute before spending seven years as the Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction for La Cañada High School.

Mr. Buchanan and his wife of 31 years Socorro, have three grown sons and when he finds the time, he enjoys traveling, soccer (although as a Brit and lifelong Manchester City F.C. fan, he calls it football!), and gardening.  He is looking forward to being closer to family in the Bay Area and, even more so, is thrilled at the prospect of becoming a Wildcat!

I believe that Mr. Buchanan will be an outstanding leader for LGHS for many years to come. Mr. Buchanan will finish the spring in his current role at OPHS but will be at LGHS several times through the spring to meet students, staff, and families and ensure a smooth leadership transition.

Mike Grove, Superintendent
