***Please note that there are some sample essay writing required as well as obtaining letters of recommendation from Counselor and Teachers. The application closes at 5:00pm on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

Middle College offers students with college potential the opportunity to complete their high school requirements on the campus of West Valley College. This program is designed to provide a supportive and challenging adult educational setting. Students take college level courses while completing high school graduation requirements. This new educational environment provides students with an opportunity to stimulate their academic development and their quest for learning.

Benefits of Middle College

The Program Offers:

  • A serious learning environment where students take control of their own learning;
  • An opportunity for exploring individual interests through more diversified course offerings, while also completing the requirements for high school graduation;
  • An environment where students have greater opportunities for guidance and improvement; and
  • An opportunity to earn their diplomas from the home high schools.

The College Environment - The Middle College program is located at West Valley College. Here students are able to:

  • Access all the student and academic support services offered at West Valley College such as the library, tutorial center, counseling center …
  • Interact with a mature peer group.

Student Responsibilities - While at Middle Colleges students will:

  • Follow the WVC calendar, except for two weeks in January;
  • Maintain excellent attendance in both the high school and college classes;
  • Follow a demanding academic schedule;
  • Take advantage of West Valley College's support services;
  • Fulfill all class requirements with grade C or higher;
  • Take responsibility academically and socially;
  • Adhere to all applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures;
  • Inform Middle College staff when absent, 3 day limit;
  • Take a minimum of 6, maximum of 11 college units each semester; and
  • Enroll in West Valley's Counseling 12 or 5 during the first semester.
  • Complete a two semester educational plan.

Student Enrollment Criteria - Students must:

  • Have completed at least 110 semester units with no make-ups required.
  • Passed the California High School Exit Exam
  • Have a 2.8 G.P.A. or higher
  • Submit two (2) completed recommendation forms from a high school teacher and one from a Advisor/Counselor;
  • Complete a two (2) page application essay;
  • Show past corrected work from one essay/assignment
  • Attend a parent/student informational meeting;
  • Complete a Parent/Student Contract;
  • Participate in the interview process;
  • Submit a completed registration packet with all required materials including - concurrent enrollment form, WVC admission form and high school transcript

NOTE:  Completing these criteria does not guarantee admission to the Middle College program.
