Meet the Liu Family
Our family has worked closely with Heath for over 4 years to help navigate Bethany’s (our daughter) special education at SHS (and now WVC).
Professionally, Heath has been fantastic: responsive, rational, and resourceful. But more importantly, we have come to know him as an incredible human being -- kind, relational, and empathetic. Even before Bethany was enrolled in SHS, Heath generously made himself available to meet and patiently answer our unorthodox questions to help calm our nerves in the HS transition.
Such personal outreach by Administrators to incoming parents is rare outside our school district. Similar to what many parents of children with special needs experience, we are very accustomed to hearing “no” in every shape and form (e.g., laws, procedures, delays, too much trouble, lack in resources, lack of precedent, etc.)
However, we have been so thankful that Heath and his team never hid behind any barrier of “no”, but always openly and honestly engaged with us to collaborate and uncover options and possibilities. Moreover, he even provided thoughtful parenting advice by gently reminding us to also insert something that Bethany would enjoy and remember from HS. It demonstrated that he didn’t just think of his role as merely a job, but rather genuinely cared about Bethany’s well-being. Because of his advice, Bethany has developed a love for ceramics and has many wonderful memories on display in our living room.
We are grateful that Heath has been placed in our lives and more importantly in Bethany’s life. Now with Heath’s broadened role, we are delighted that more families in our community can benefit from who he is. We are also confident that under his leadership, our community's values of care, trust, and respect will be reflected in our beloved LGSHS district.
