District Leadership
Bill W. Sanderson
Superintendent
Bill W. Sanderson was selected as the Superintendent of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District in the 2022/2023 school year. Previously serving as the Assistant Superintendent of High Schools in the San Francisco Unified School District for eight years, he has worked in public education for three decades in Charleston, SC, and San Francisco.
Growing up in rural Loris, SC, just after desegregation, Mr. Sanderson saw firsthand the isolation of underserved populations and the life-changing opportunities that education can offer. While neither of his parents graduated from high school, they instilled in him the core values of education and hard work. In 1988, he completed his Bachelor's degree in Biology from Charleston Southern University followed by a Master's in Educational Leadership from The Citadel in 1994. This was then followed by an Education Specialist degree from The Citadel in 2000. He began his career as a middle school science teacher in Summerville, SC, and was selected for the Principal Apprentice Program by the SC Department of Education.
After completion of the program, he served as an Assistant Principal and Principal in Charleston, SC. In 2003, Mr. Sanderson moved to San Francisco where he began his “second career” in education as a high school Biology teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Executive Director prior to becoming an Assistant Superintendent. Under his leadership, SFUSD has seen a continuous increase in graduation rates for all students, implemented an Ethnic Studies Program in all high schools, and increased the diversity of administrators in high schools. Mr. Sanderson deeply believes that access to a high-quality education is an imperative civil right of all people. He approaches his career with passion, conviction, and the desire to give every student the opportunities he was fortunate enough to experience.
