Meet the Superintendent

Mr. Cary Matsuoka begins his tenure as Superintendent for the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District on October 1, 2006. He came to the District from nearby Fremont Union High School District where he had served as high school principal, district coordinator of guidance and assessment, and high school assistant principal. He is pleased to be returning to this district where he taught Science and Computer Science at Saratoga High School from 1984-1997 prior to becoming an administrator.

Mr. Matsuoka earned a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Science from the University of California at Davis and a master’s degree in Educational Administration from San Jose State University. A native of California, he grew up in Torrance. He and his wife Polly, a Marriage and Family Therapist, live in San Jose. They have three sons – all students of the University of California at Los Angeles. Daniel graduated with a degree in History and is making plans to attend seminary in preparation for pastoral ministry. Andrew is currently a senior in Computer Science, and Stephen just entered UCLA as a freshman with interests in international development.

As an educator, Mr. Matsuoka is focused on the development of young adults. He believes in educating the whole child, which includes their intellectual, emotional, and interpersonal development. He thrived on the challenge of teaching students, finding great rewards in watching them mature as teenagers. As Superintendent his passion is to lead and teach the adults in the school community to do their best work with students. In addition, he is committed to providing support for parents as they guide their children to becoming successful and productive members of society. Mr. Matsuoka believes that honest, clear, and open communication is the foundation of an excellent school district and welcomes input and dialogue with staff, students, parents and members of the community.

Mr. Matsuoka considers it an honor to serve the Los Gatos – Saratoga Joint Union High School District as Superintendent. “The Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga communities provide wonderful support for public education, making these two of the premier high schools in the State of California. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone inside the schools and the local communities.”
