Superintendent's Letter

Dear Students and Parents,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, myself, and staff, welcome back to the 2012-13 school year in the Los Gatos – Saratoga Union High School District!  Since its inception in 1893, our district has demonstrated a proven record of excellence.  Last year, over ninety-six percent of our graduating seniors went on to attend college and with many accepted to the most selective colleges and universities in the country.  Student scores on Advanced Placement exams, SAT, and SAT II are among the highest in the state.  And, during the recent WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) reviews, our two comprehensive schools, Los Gatos and Saratoga High Schools received the maximum six-year accreditation, an honor achieved by less than twenty percent of schools statewide!

We are also committed to providing alternative pathways to success for all students.  The Middle College program at West Valley College, the Nova alternative program, Independent Study, Applied Arts courses and a variety of extracurricular options are in place to support student strengths, needs and interest beyond the traditional classroom.

In May 2010, you showed your support for our students and our schools with a vote of 73% in favor of the first-ever LGSUHSD parcel tax, Measure A.  Measure A funds support our efforts to provide an outstanding education and learning environment for our students and have been used to maintain core academic programs, such as math, science, and English, keep class sizes low, attract and retain highly qualified teachers, maintain college and career preparation programs and provide classroom materials and science laboratory equipment.

The educational foundations at Los Gatos and Saratoga High provide additional resources to support our instructional program through the generosity of our parents and the community. Both the New Millennium Foundation and the Saratoga High School Foundation raise additional funds to support our schools, including funds for college/career centers for our students, technology, and enrichment courses.

Students in our district succeed because of our partnership – an outstanding staff working with committed, involved parents and the community.  I am excited to be part of this collaboration and look forward to another great year, where students experience the best in education and thrive!

Sincerely,

Robert Mistele

Superintendent
